We are beginning the process of taking him to court.  He mostly completed the framing phase which began 1/13/2014.  Windows were not installed in dormer, no siding on the outside, no shingles on the roof.  All together he is about 30% into the job with no materials on site and hasn't shown up to work in 5 weeks.  Many many excuses have been made and most of the money has been paid to him.

I made every mistake a home owner can make and he took advantage of every one.  He is the classic example of the nice guy with good intentions contractor that scams home owners, takes the money, and runs. 

He seemed honest when we hired him, mentioned church, talked about singing gospel music, discussed country type decorations with the wife, etc., but recent internet searches found an Ashland Topix forum discussion explaining how he has done this same thing to others. 

Do not trust him.
